Before heading to the pitch and compete in the Midwest, the Crusaders and their supporters hit the links at Lost Nation Golf Course for the team’s first annual golf outing, presented by Deloitte. With 72 golfers competing in groups of foursomes throughout the day the course was packed full with plenty of quality golf action.
The overall winners of the outing came from the Rahill family foursome. The forward and his accompanying family members shot a solid 12 under par. The winners made the most of every chip, swing and mulligan to separate themselves from the rest of the pack, but the result was far from a run-away victory. The second place team was one stroke away from tying the top spot and sharing the glory. The second-place foursome was made up by Bobby Szabo, Mark Metz, Mark Metz, Casey Sovey and Mark Staron II.
There were other notable performances throughout the day as well. It was rumored that Tony Brown and his foursome were in constant contention for one of the top spots and were even in first at one point. Unfortunately, he, Jeff Albertini, Scott Wallace and their fourth group member couldn’t back the rumors with strokes and ended outside of the top two spots. There were also some shots golfers wish they could have back. At the start, one retired prop nearly shanked a drive into the parking lot, which was directly to the right of the tee box. Throughout the day his shots improved, though.
Eric Nutter, long-time prop and all around good guy, got the longest recorded drive during the event, while the Old Boy known only as Gabby landed his ball closest to the hole.
The outing was a great success. Local sponsors helped make the event possible, on top of the help from Rugby Athletic and generous Title Sponsor, Deloitte. There will surely be another outing in the future and more social gatherings held by the team. Stay tuned for further updates to the social calendar, and remember to tell more friends loved ones about the upcoming events. It’s never too late to join the Crusade!
