The Cleveland Crusaders Premier side headed to Indianapolis for the first match of the season. This was a pivotal opening match as both sides have faced each other in the playoffs in the past few years.
The Crusaders jumped on the board early after a series of physical phases, capped off by rookie wing Chris Reed with a try in the corner. The Crusaders would maintain that lead late into the match with tries by prop Chris Fischer, rookie center Will Mount, and some nice kicking by Dan Heistercamp making his debut at Fly half.
Late in the 2nd half a series of miscues allowed Indianapolis to score two converted tries in under 5 minutes to put the Crusaders down by 8 with 10 minutes left in the match.
With their backs against the wall the Crusaders executed a brillant weak side attack which ended with an electric carry by scrum half Cory Graham, and a thundering pick and go from forward Terry Kilbane for the try, the conversion by Heistercamp brought the Crusaders back to within a point of the Impalas.
With under 3 minutes left a solid counterruck caused the ball to shoot out the back of a ruck to be smartly snatched up by wing Alex Dine, to slice in under the posts for the backbreaker, the Crusaders were able to grind out the rest of the match to take home a bonus point victory.
